Why women need to dress as men?

The fashion images

Today's fashion image is characterized by trends all over the world, and one of the biggest trends is the masculine style, where feminine styles are combined with masculine elements. The clothes becoming looser and more oversized which is a trend in the current fashion image, it does no longer necessarily have to be feminine and highlight the woman's figure which has previously been the focus. In recent times more women are being inspired by the masculine fashion image, the classic suit is no longer only reserved for men but has instead become a fashion classic for both men and women.

In the 1960s, the term “unisex” was coined to describe clothing, footwear, or hairstyles that could be worn by both sexes. In the mid 60s Le Smoking was an innovative expression of gender and modernity, in this century its significance has come to seem both irrelevant and undermining, since it was based on a relatively rigid view of gender.

The interesting and remarkable thing about the fashion scene is that it has always been considered that it has been easier for women to dress masculine, and more difficult for men to dress feminine, because the masculine is always and still very much favored in our society while looking down on the feminine. This problem has existed for a long time and the fashion was also dominated by that in the 1980s. The 1980s fashion reflected their motto "dressed for success". To incorporate the symbols of men’s clothing as a woman, the women was wearing the suit.

In the fashion image, fashion magazines help to categorize how to dress when you are a woman and what is feminine to wear. The magazines usually set guidelines for how a woman should dress, it helps to maintain femininity and paint a monotonous picture of how to look like a woman. It gives us following question to reflect upon, are fashion magazines helping to construct and dominate what feminine fashion is?

Danish model and instagrammer

A model and instagrammer who has openly traded and talked about the inequality of gender differences in the fashion picture, is Vincent Beier. Vincent is a Danish model and instagrammer with 12.9 thousand followers. The Danish model wears tight-fitting dresses, high boots and red lipstick. Someone speaks about it as a problem, because Vincent in many opinions does not fit into the box as a male. He makes his masculinity wrong and for other people it will be complex to relate to. For Vincent, it is important that we get worded and shown that there are many different ways to be human and it's not about whether you fit into a predetermined box that is socially constructed. Vincent Beier's way of acting and presenting himself is a way of making up for gender differences and can be seen as a softening of structuralism.

To that extent, our society is characterized by inequality and gender segregation. The division is noted indirectly in the department stores, where the women are on one floor and the men on another floor. One may wonder whether the gender struggle is in fact no longer about men against women, but about the ultimate personal freedom. Boyfriend fashion has been in for a long time but why is there no such thing as girlfriend fashion. when the fashion industry suddenly reacts by dressing men in garments we typically associate with the feminine, then we become aware of the embracing and restrictive regulations we have created for ourselves.
